What is World Smile Day?
Every year, on the first Friday of October, we celebrate World Smile DayĀ ā a beautiful reminder that a simple smile can change someoneās whole day. The day was founded by Harvey Ball, the artist who created the iconic yellow smiley face in 1963. His message was simple but powerful: āDo an act of kindness. Help one person smile.ā
Why Smiling Matters š
A smile is more than just an expression ā itās a powerful tool for emotional wellbeing:
It can instantly lift your mood.
It helps reduce stress and anxiety.
It releases endorphins ā your bodyās natural feel-good hormones.
It builds connections and makes others feel welcome.
Smiling is contagious, and one small smile can create a ripple effect of positivity in your community, workplace, or home.
When Smiling Feels Hard
For some people, especially those struggling with anxiety, trauma, bereavement, or phobias, smiling can feel forced or even impossible. Lifeās challenges can weigh heavily, and joy might feel far away. At Very Therapy, we understand this. Sometimes, you donāt just need to āput on a smileā ā you need a safe, supportive space to rediscover it.
How Counselling Can Help You Find Your Smile Again š
Through therapy, we work with you to:
Process whatās holding you backĀ from feeling joy.
Release fears, trauma, or self-doubtĀ that may be dimming your light.
Rebuild confidenceĀ so that smiling feels genuine, not hidden behind pain.
Empower youĀ to uncover your true self ā the version of you that can laugh, smile, and feel free again.
A Smile is Never Just a Smile
Smiling doesnāt mean life is perfect ā it means youāre choosing hope. Every smile is a little victory, a reminder of your inner strength, and a gift to those around you.
So today, on World Smile Day, whether you share a smile with a stranger, a loved one, or even yourself in the mirror ā remember its power. And if youāre finding it hard to smile right now, know that you donāt have to go through it alone.
